Christmas elves are seen as “Santa’s Helper” and today, you may find a traditional Elf Costume in green and red felt or you may find a more daring outfit for adult Christmas parties. It is fun to check out the history of being a Christmas elf if you have not already studied it. Here are some fun facts about Christmas elves from days past.
Elven History, Lore and Mischief
There are other stories about elves being not only mischievous but also that they were barbarians which is nearly impossible to imagine. These little pointed ear creatures are devilish and hide out when they think they are going to be seen. They treat everyone well unless they are treated badly. No one person can claim to know where elves live, the elf lore states that these creatures were originally part of German pagan beliefs. These little creatures were also believed to protect homes. The challenge was that if you treated them well, they provided good things for you and your family; while if you treated an elf badly then they would play tricks on you to make you wish you had not treated them poorly. There are of course those who believe that elves love to play pranks. This is likely true though they are more likely to play pranks on those who do not believe that they must behave themselves and treat elves well. Somewhere on the Korvatunturi Mountain in Finland is where the Christmas elves seem to make their home. This of course remains largely a mystery since it is a well-kept secret.
Christmas Elves and Elven Names
There is always great speculation regarding the role than an elf plays at Christmas time. Some people believe that the elves help create toys, help deliver toys and even help keep track of who is nice and who is naughty. There are even those who believe that Santa’s elves help keep the sleigh running well and take care of the reindeer.
Many different names are bandied about for the Christmas elves. There are those who claim they know exactly how many elves that Santa has as well, but of course since they are never seen, it is highly unlikely that anyone knows who all of the elves are.
Some of the elves that are believed to be part of Santa’s workshop include those who help respond to Christmas letters and emails – these elves are the children of Gryla and Leppaludi and not only do they help with toy design, they also answer Santa’s mail.
Western names of the Christmas elves that are a help to Santa Claus are:
- Guardian of the secret village Pepper Minstix
- The Naughty & Nice list is taken care of by Alabaster Snowball
- The magic toy-making machine was invented by Bushy Evergreen
- Sugarplum Mary helps Mrs. Claus and is in charge of sweets
- Wunorse Openslae not only is believed to have designed Santa’s sleigh but also makes sure that it stays in good working order. Wunorse also takes care of the reindeer to make sure they are ready for Christmas each year.
Elf Dress and Manners
Elves are traditionally donned in green and red attire befitting their station. This is especially true around the holidays. However, there are those who have a bit of extra mischief – and since elves may be male or female it is not uncommon to see them acting up and dressing up for their mates. Elves are creatures who believe that they can find their true love only one time in their lives and they make the most of the courtship process. Elves marry young and stay married throughout their lives – an interesting catch since they are immortal as well.
These impish little creatures have worked their way into our folklore and have a long and rich history. Have some fun this holiday season and be one of Santa’s elves. See what elf fits your style here at Frankel’s!
Hey, do you remember what you said when you exchanged your vows with the one you loved? “Until death do us part”? Remember that? Well, lucky for you, death can actually be the beginning instead of the end this Halloween!
On her wedding day a bride is to look her best as she’s walking down the aisle. Whether she’s alive or dead, it doesn’t matter. This Boneyard Bride is the perfect example of the concept, a walking skeleton who despite missing a significant portion of her organs and skin, can still glow under the moonlight on this special occasion.
This wedding gown is not only the traditional white; it is designed with black and just the smallest hint of red. Lining the low cut of the chest area is black lace, hovering above the printed black floral and spider web patterns. The revealed rib cage and backbone is also screen-printed on the velvet waist with the bride’s love shown with her heart peeking out from beneath the ribs. Black-patterned chiffon is layered over the white under skirt as well as the puffy shoulders that, when one spins around in, bells out beautifully. The long sleeves of velvet reveal the arm bones leading to the hands that clutch at the dead bouquet. Snuggly wrapped around her throat is the black-laced choker with little red bowtie. And with any bride, this wedding attire does include the veil in which the bride’s intricately detailed-skeleton face is printed right on top of the mesh material.
The Boneyard Bride is available in both the 2X as well as the 3X size for the ladies. I myself found the former to fit just right when I jumped at the opportunity to try it on. Keep in mind that this is a low cut gown so for you ladies that are bigger in the chest area, you may want to pull up just a smidge. The dress fits comfortably both in the waist and hip area, leaving the skirt to sway as you walk. This has been one the most highly anticipated costumes for me this season and I must say, InCharacter does not disappoint in anyway shape or form. In fact they even provide for the gentlemen a matching costume for all of the couples out there aptly named the Graveyard Groom! Even though the make-up shown on both models are not included, our company does carry the proper make-up required both online as well as in our store location.
Now, if there was any genre of costume that has been done so often over the decades, the award would more than likely go to the vampires. Every other year or so some new hype comes along to remind us just what fascinates us so much about these undead creatures.
Going as far back as the original novel of “Dracula” by Bram Stoker in 1897, or even further still with “The Vampyre” in 1819 by John Polidori, the subject of these creatures have continued to mesmerize humans with their legends and mysteries. Today these novels are still being read along with popular titles such as “The Vampire Chronicles” by Anne Rice or “The Cirque du Freak” novels by Darren Shan. Television and movies are no exception to the rule either with their countless Hollywood movies and television shows, like “Buffy” and “True Blood”.
The popular assumption with vampires is that, especially with the earlier ones, the style itself was more of the Victorian Era. With the Vampiress by Sunnywood, the elegant glamor of this dress is matched by the modern touches of an older style. This form-fitting dress is mostly black with red trimming and red patterned fabric down the center. Across the chest area there is black mesh and black ribbons that is woven down not unlike a corset. With the sleeves hanging off the shoulders two straps are in place to keep the dress in place. And starting from the middle of the forearm, delicate patterned lace veils your wrists and hands. With the ruffled bottom and thin over-skirt of chiffon, this is one Lady Vampire who is bound to turn heads at any late night gathering!
A design made exclusively for plus-size costume wearers this dress is available in three sizes. I myself found myself most comfortable in the largest size available, the 3X, which measures out to being a dress size average of 22 to 24. The fabric is light and the material draping from the arms does not cause my skin to itch as one would guess. Whether you are a long-time fan of vampire lore or someone who just likes to read the occasional comic or watch a movie from time to time, the Vampiress costume is a beautiful design for all to enjoy.
The great thing about Halloween is having the chance to dress up as anything. Mix and match any idea a person possibly think of and it’s perfectly acceptable to wear on Halloween. Nothing is safe from this night of fun and dress-up: not even the other holidays! There is one particular character has proven this to be fact, a dead man who found himself captivated by the spirit of Christmas and wanted to make it his own!
From the infamous film by the mind of Tim Burton, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” is a story about a skeleton by the name of Jack Skellington who finds himself ridiculously bored of Halloween. Now, this doesn’t bode very well. After all, the holiday itself is essentially the town he lives in! But on one fateful day though, while out walking his ghost dog in the woods, the skeleton man stumbles across a peculiar group of trees with the strangest of doors carved into the trunks. Curiosity may have killed the cat but Jack was far too intrigued to just ignore this little find. Little did he realize that beyond the door shaped like a Christmas tree that once through it, his after life was to be changed forever! And now you too can dress the part of this clever yet child-like fellow!
Fans of this movie will be happy to know that Disguise has been kind enough to provide for us a Jack Skellington costume to be worn this Halloween season! This two-piece costume is perfect for anyone looking to dress the part of the Pumpkin King himself. The pin-stripe jacket is made from polyester and is very lightweight. In the back, the coat tails are not only intentionally tattered but also slightly uneven in length. It closes in the front with Velcro. In order to complete the costume the wearer will have to provide their own pants, pin stripe would be the best to match the jacket but plain blain will work just as well, along with a white shirt. Jack’s signature bow tie is also included complete with the painted eyes of the bat and misshapen wings. The bow tie is bendable, allowing you to set the wings to your liking.
The costume only comes in one Plus-Size for the gentleman costume-goers, the average sizing that Disguise has given this is between jacket sizes 50 to 52. I would reccommend that underneath the jacket a plain white t-shirt will do just fine. And just to be noted, we do carry the matching costume for any couples look to dress the parts from this film! Sally, the rag-doll who was always looking out for the some-what oblivious skeleton, is the perfect costume to complete this strange but adorable couple.
Halloween, when you get right down to it, is a night of terror and unleashing the twisted thoughts lurking within one’s imagination. On All Hallow’s Eve people dress in costumes so that for just one night they can be anyone they desire to be. And for a number of them, it’s to play the role of a wretched soul driven by revenge, madness or simply by demented desires.
Who better to bring to life such creatures than the man behind “Hellraiser”, “Jericho” and “Book of Blood”, just to name a fair few? From the creative mind of Clive Barker with the help of the costume company, Disguise, from the deepest, darkest corners of the abyss comes the “Dark Bazaar” Costume Line. Within this fine yet terrifying collection is a series of costumes, masks and accessories for those of us who dare to dive into such dark ideas.
With each costume comes a story as devised by Mister Barker himself: the twisted assassin for hire known as Tattu Furio; Tormented, an asylum directior consumed by dementia; the spiderella named Web Woman who plays with her food; the once adored Queen of Skulls corrupted by ritual; a demon named only as Fly By Night who is driven by maddening vengeance and the Serpent Seductress who tempt and entice her prey. Each and every single of these creatures linger within this Dark Bazaar as they tell their tales and haunt the dreams of innocent and corrupted alike. Some will seek out their prey while others remain trapped in the hell of their own making.
The Dark Bazaar gives those interested a chance to pretend to be a monster for that one eerie night of the year with their series of full and half-face masks. Paranoia may all be in your head, but what happens when you think there is someone watching you from behind and it turns out they’re a lot closer than you think? It’s Behind You is a full head latex mask that allows the wearer to prove that demons are always following them no matter where they go. Or what about playing the part of easily jealous lover? The Ghoul Friend Half Mask will leave every significant other thinking twice about straying from that relationship! And it’s one thing to hear voices in your head; It’s another fact entirely when those voices belong to the multiple faces occupying your head such as the case with the Faces Half-Mask!
This Halloween season, take the chance to play the role of a monster and step into story that Clive Barker has made especially for this nightmarish evening.
When it comes to dressing up for any sort of costume occasion, pirates are one of the most popular genres. There’s just something fun about pirates that gets us going every time we think about them.
All the pirate stories and movies revolve around daring adventures and life-threatening escapades on the high seas. Sometimes it’s the little things too, like trying to find where you had put that blasted bottle of rum you’ve been saving. With pirates in the picture, anything can happen or be done. After all, a park ride managed to produce three (and soon to be four) blockbuster films about pirates. It’s no wonder they are so popular!
But sailing the seven seas is not just a mans job! Women can hold their own when it comes to commanding a vessel or forcing their captives to walk the plank. They just do with more style and panache. The Gold Doubloon Pirate, a three-piece ensemble courtesy of Leg Avenue, has all the rugged yet classy sense that a lady captain should have. A white sleeveless top with a black corset is made more elegant with the addition of pure chiffon lace sleeves that bell down and sway in the breeze. A vibrant red ribbon bow is a small but eye-catching contrast. The black matching skirt is styled to give the appearance that this costume is one entire piece instead of two. To finish off the costume, secure a black and red slanted-striped sash around the waist.
With costumes in general, I am usually between the sizes of 2X and 3X. I found that going for the larger size in this case worked out best, which is a 3X/4X. There is wiring in the corset that keeps the form and figure correct. The skirt has an elastic waistband which is always a plus. The only note I feel I need to make is to be a little wary of the sleeves of the costume. They also have elastic bands to keep them in place but the material itself can feel a little itchy. All in all ,this is my favorite pirate costume we carry and it is under heavy consideration for me to purchase for future fairs I plan on attending!
One thing that a number of people have enjoyed since childhood has to be cartoons. And really, when one grows-up, how can you ever forget those lively and colorful animations you watched on a Saturday morning while enjoying your favorite bowl of cereal?
Well, Dreamgirl has found a way to remind us of those enjoyable mornings as a child with their “Mousin’ Around” costume for women! This design pays homage to the most recognizable leading lady mouse in cartoon history with a black and white polka-dotted dress and ruffled chiffon hemming. Touches of red lining and ribbon accent the playful attire along with the matching tail and headband that are adorned with the ears and bow. But what makes this ensemble even more appealing is the ability to wear the dress outside of costume-centered events. With it’s detachable tail, this mousy dress can easily be worn by itself or with a pair of comfortable dress slacks. To have such versatility in a costume makes it all the more worth-while to own.
Now while it is not required, I personally recommend the addition of a double-layered petticoat to add more fullness to the skirt. When it comes to the sizing, I myself am typically between the two plus sizes that this company offers, but I found the 1X/2X to work just fine. The only draw back was that the belt was too small for me but the costume can easily be worn without it.
Now in no way is this costume to encourage the act of engaging in robbery! Instead, this is to embolden those who have entertained the idea of dressing the part of one of the most famous names in English Folklore. And bonus points to you if you can pull off the right accent to go with it!
Robin Hood has been seen in many entertainment forms : the classic Disney film in 1973; the comedic genius that is Robin Hood: Men in Tights twenty-years later; the most recent movie adaptation with Russell Crowe in 2010; as well as with the BBC’s television series. While some points in plot may change from version to version, one thing always remains the same: Robin Hood is and will always be an iconic hero who takes from the rich and gives to the poor.
Rubies has brought us a new Robin Hood costume that is a part of their Full Cut Costume Collection. This costume includes two pieces: a long-sleeve tunic and pants with attached boot-tops. The tunic is lightweight 100% polyester while the vest and cuffs are made of velvet. Accenting the shoulders and the front of the tunic are metal studs with faux leather-looking trim with black lacing. The cream-colored sleeves also have the black studded trimmed cuffs attached as well. Remember that it is designed to fit a little loosely. As for the pants, they are black with attached matching felt boot-top covers making it possible for you to wear sneakers or shoes with the costume. The waistband is lined with elastic that allows extra leeway when it comes to fitting properly. When it comes to the sizing itself, Rubies states that it fits within the range of jacket size 46 to 52, but keep in mind that this costume runs large as it is made to be loose.
If you’re looking to finish off the costume with the right accessories, I would highly recommend adding a quiver and bow set with arrows (we carry them with suction-cup tips) as well as a cloak for sneaking around at night!
